Location and Classification
Engelgrube is a registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the Neumagen district of Neumagen-Dhron in the Mosel. The official vineyard directory lists it under vineyard number 410405 and assigns it to the Großlage Michelsberg. In the cadastre area of Neumagen, 42.3 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
Topography and Soils
The plots are described as steep slopes and are predominantly farmed by hand. Dark slate forms the basis of the vineyard soils.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
From Engelgrube, Riesling, Rivaner, Kerner and Pinot Noir are documented. Among others, Riesling Kabinett feinherb, Riesling Spätlese trocken, Riesling Spätlese feinherb, Riesling Auslese and Rivaner Classic are recorded. A Riesling from the 2023 vintage was offered as a dry Mosel Prädikatswein in the Spätlese category.
Historical Evidence and Winemaking
Engelgrube appears in a description of Neumagen from the year 1830 and on a historical viticulture map of the Mosel from 1906. For estates with plots in the site, hand-harvesting as well as environmentally oriented farming are documented. Winemaking includes gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and maturation in stainless steel tanks.
