Location and classification
Drachenstein is a legally defined single vineyard within the cadastral area of Rüdesheim am Rhein in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The site belongs to the Johannisberg area and to the larger site Burgweg.
Topography and soils
The vineyards, which are oriented from south to south-south-west, lie at an altitude of about 200 to 308 metres and have a slope gradient of approximately 20 to 40 per cent. The soils consist of Taunus quartzite and loess loam with sandstone and quartzite; in part, deep soils with an increased lime content occur.
Grape varieties and wine style
Riesling and Spätburgunder are classified for Drachenstein. The wines are described as floral and elegant, with a fine spicy note. The VDP lists Rüdesheimer Drachenstein as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 45 hectares.
Name
The name Drachenstein refers to a rock that is associated with a mythological name and may have been intended to resemble a dragon.
