Location and extent
The Deutschherrenberg is a vineyard site in the municipality of Zeltingen-Rachtig in the German wine region of Mosel. The site lies on the Eifel side of the Mosel opposite the Rachtig district and extends from the Kloster Machern in the direction of the Hochmoselbrücke.
Soil and wine character
Documented parcels are located on extremely steep slopes. The Deutschherrenberg contains red slate, which the resident winemaker describes as being of volcanic origin. From this, a mineral character of the wines is derived.
Grape variety and wine style
For the site, Riesling is documented. This includes a Riesling Kabinett, feinherb, with a mineral character, as well as a fruit-driven, barrel-fermented Riesling Kabinett with residual sweetness, which was harvested at Kabinett ripeness.
Name and cultivation
The name calls to mind the Deutschherren, who were active in the surrounding area in the Middle Ages. A winemaker replanted their parcel in spring 2003 with own-rooted planting material and documents their work from the vine to the harvest.
