Location and classification

Dechantsberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the winegrowing region Mosel, within the area of Burg Cochem and Großlage Goldbäumchen. It is located in the municipality Treis-Karden, in the Karden cadastral district.

Area and topography

The official register of winegrowing sites lists Dechantsberg under the vineyard site number 440129 and states a planted vineyard area of 1.3 hectares. The site is documented as a steep slope in Karden. A field description from 2010 records in the lower slope area the traditional stake training and in the upper section terraces that increasingly have fallen into decay.

Grape variety and wine style

Riesling is documented as the most important grape variety in the Karden vineyards, including Dechantsberg. Wines referred to as Karden Dechantsberg include Riesling Spätlese in the styles dry and fine off-dry. The name Dechantsberg refers to a dean and is connected with historical ecclesiastical hierarchies on the Mosel. For the cultivation of the Karden steep slope sites, cellar work using traditional methods and contemporary technology is documented.
