Location and topography
Burgweg is a vineyard site in Großkarlbach in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The site lies above the Eckbach and includes, at the edge of the village, the core parcel Im großen Garten. Burgweg is oriented to the south, lies at about 120 to 200 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of approximately 5 to 15 percent. Im großen Garten is described as a comparatively steep, protected south-facing slope above the Eckbach.
Soils
The soils consist of loess loam over limestone bedrock and calcareous marl. Over short distances, soil conditions vary and include gravel, loam and weathered material from tertiary limestone. In Im großen Garten, heavy loam with numerous limestone stones lies over firm limestone rock shaped by the Eckbachtal.
Grape varieties and wines
As classified grape varieties for the Großkarlbacher Burgweg, Riesling, Spätburgunder and Grauer Burgunder are listed. Documented wines from the site are dry Riesling, dry Spätburgunder and dry Grauer Burgunder; in addition, Grosses Gewächs and dry Spätlese are also recorded.
Classification and history
The Großkarlbacher Burgweg is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® and is given as having a classified area of 129 hectares. The name has been documented in the form uff den Burgweg since 1495. The Wine site list Rheinland-Pfalz lists Burgweg in Großkarlbach for the year 2024. For a documented Spätburgunder from Im großen Garten, a ripening period of 20 months in new French barriques is stated; the vines from this parcel were planted in 1993/94 using planting material from Burgundy.
