Location and single-vineyard status
Burglay is a legally registered single vineyard in the municipality of Minheim and its cadastral district. It belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel and to the Bernkastel area. The official wine-growing site registration number is 410401. For the cadastral district of Minheim, the 2024 crop acreage register identified a total of 13.3 hectares of planted vineyard land for this site.
Soil and climate
The name of the wine site is associated with the Burglay slate rock above the lock at Wintrich near Minheim. The vineyard slopes of Minheim contain Devonian slate in different stages of weathering; Burglay is shaped by slate soils. For Minheim, a cool Mosel climate is described with warm days, cool nights, sufficient rainfall and enough sunshine during the ripening of the grapes.
Grape variety and wine styles
For a parcel designated as “An der Burglay”, Riesling is documented. Wines also bearing the designation Minheimer Burglay Riesling are likewise evidenced. The documented wine styles include Riesling Spätlese, Riesling Auslese and Riesling Beerenauslese.
Historic name
The name Burglay goes back to a fortified Roman high settlement on the Burglay slate rock, which is dated to the early fourth century. The site included remnants of buildings and small Roman finds.
