Location and classification
Burglay rocks is a single-vineyard site in Zell (Mosel) in the Zell area of the wine-growing region Mosel. The vineyards lie on the slope above the town near the Mosel.
Site
The steep site is oriented to the south to south-east. Its deep, weathered slate soils have a higher proportion of topsoil; blue slate is documented as the bedrock.
Vines and cultivation
At Burglay rocks, among other things, Riesling is grown. Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder and Dornfelder are also documented. Part of the vineyard plantings was planted in 1943 and is described as low-yielding. Cultivation takes place on steep slopes; hand-harvesting is also recorded for grapes from this site.
Wine character and history
Winegrowers’ descriptions link the Riesling from Burglay rocks with a mineral character, expression of fruit, powerful structure and long ageing potential. A historical field-name is associated with Zeller Burglay rocks. At the foot of the steep slope, which faces south-west, there are Roman building remains that are interpreted as a possible Roman press.
