Location and classification
The Burgberg is a legally registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Alken in the Mosel. The site lies to the east of Alken on the rising Burgberg on the right bank of the Lower Mosel, which is also known as Terraced Mosel.
Relief and soils
The Burgberg is documented as a steep slope with terraced sections. For wines from the Alkener Burgberg, slate soils are described; the site is also associated with slate terraces.
Grape varieties and wine profiles
For the vineyards of Alken including the Burgberg, Riesling, Blauer Spätburgunder, Kerner and Dornfelder are documented. A Burgberg wine from Alken also provides for Weißburgunder. Documented Riesling late harvests from the Burgberg are available in dry, gently off-dry and sweet styles; in addition, a dry Weißburgunder quality wine under the designation Alkener Burgberg is recorded.
Cultivation and register data
A documented producer harvests Riesling from the Burgberg by hand and describes his parcels there as steep-slope vineyards. In the official vineyard sites register 2024, the Burgberg is assigned to the grand cru Weinhex in the Burg Cochem area. The vineyard site number is 440502; the planted area covers 9.6 hectares.
