The Bruderschaft, generally referred to as the Klüsserather Bruderschaft, is located near Klüsserath in the Mosel
Terrain and Soils
The vineyard forms, behind Klüsserath, a steep vineyard wall facing south. Documented areas show a south to south-west aspect and slope gradients of up to 83 percent. The vines grow in heavily weathered Devonian slate soils; in a documented sector, the slate is deep-rooting and contains a high proportion of fine earth.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Riesling is the most important documented grape variety of the Bruderschaft; besides this, Pinot varieties are cultivated. A documented area contains Riesling vines of around 45 years old. The Rieslings are matured as Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Eiswein, and are dry, off-dry or sweet.
Cultivation and Name
A documented parcel was converted from traditional single-post training to wire training. A Klüsserather Bruderschaft Riesling Auslese from the 2023 vintage was produced from botrytised grapes and fermented sweetly with residual sugar. The name Bruderschaft goes back to a prayer brotherhood founded in 1681 by the Klüsserath parish priest J. Gerhard von Manderscheid, who endowed nine vineyards for the permanent staffing of the parish.
