Location and classification
Brautrock is a legally registered single vineyard in the cadastral district of Bullay. It belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, in which it is part of the Burg Cochem area and the Großlage Grafschaft. The vineyard site lies above the municipality; the official Bullay Wine Education Trail runs through Brautrock.
Relief and soils
A documented plot is located on a steep slope, falls slightly towards the east, and has vines arranged in rows running across the slope, oriented to the south-west. The site is also described as being south-facing and not terraced. The weathered slate soil contains quartzite and greywacke.
Vines and wines
In the official vineyard register for 2024, Brautrock is listed under vineyard number 440213 with 9.1 hectares of planted vineyard area in Bullay. A documented plot comprises 78 regularly arranged vine rows. The site is shown to produce Riesling, Kerner and Müller-Thurgau. The documented wines include dry and off-dry Rieslings, as well as a fruit-sweet Kerner Spätlese. A 2024 Kerner is designated as a Mosel Prädikatswein Spätlese; according to the technical data sheet, the grapes were picked by hand.
Name and vinification
The name Brautrock has been documented in Bullay since the 16th century. According to a local tradition, it refers to a legend from the late 16th century, according to which a vineyard was transferred to finance a bride’s dress and the wedding costs. A documented Riesling was fermented spontaneously and, after a longer maceration period, was developed in stainless steel tanks.
