Location and areas
Bischofsgarten is a wine-growing site designation that covers multiple municipalities in the Palatinate. The areas are distributed across Forst with 32.3 hectares, Friedelsheim with 85.5 hectares, and Wachenheim with 90.1 hectares of productive vineyard area in the wine-growing site directory of Rhineland-Palatinate 2024. The Wachenheim portion lies to the north-east of the town.
Soil and climate
In the Forst portion, the documented soil consists of sand and loamy sand. The Friedelsheim area, including part of Bischofsgarten, is described as being protected from harsh winds and particularly mild.
Grape varieties and viticulture
In the Forst portion, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Dornfelder, Spätburgunder and Portugieser are planted. On the lighter soils, according to the municipal description, red grape varieties achieve good ripeness and colour development.
Name and classification
The name Bischofsgarten refers to the former ownership by the prince-bishops of Speyer. In Friedelsheim, the wine-growing site designation Neuberg was renamed to Friedelsheimer Bischofsgarten in 1971. Bischofsgarten is listed as a single site within the Großlage Forster Schnepfenflug.
