Location and classification
The Schlossberg is a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in the Rheingau, to the west of Rüdesheim along the Rhine curve of Binger Loch opposite Bingen.
Topography and soils
The south- to south-west-facing hillside extends from about 120 to 160 metres above sea level. Strong sunshine and the river Rhine’s reflective warmth shape the site. Vineyard walls support the rows of vines. The soils consist predominantly of Taunus quartzite and Phyllite slate, are permeable and can store heat.
Grape varieties and wine style
The VDP Riesling and Spätburgunder are grown on the Schlossberg as classified grape varieties. Rieslings from the quartzite soils are described as having a mineral character, pronounced acidity and a fine expression of fruit; longer maturation for these wines is documented.
Name history
The name goes back to Ehrenfels Castle, which was built around 1211 as a fortification and customs stronghold. Today, only the ruins can still be seen.
