Location and classification
The Böddiger Berg lies in the district of Böddigen in the city of Felsberg in Hesse, on the banks of the Eder. The vineyard site is assigned to the Qualitätsweinbaugebiet Rheingau, even though it lies outside the geographical landscape of Rheingau. It is listed as an officially recognised Einzellage in the Rheingau wine-growing sites register.
Site and cultivation
The roughly 1.4-hectare vineyard is located on a south-west-facing slope and is terraced. The soil consists of weathered North Hessian lava basalt. The comparatively cool North Hessian climate means that cultivation depends particularly on early or late frosts and on sunshine in the months of August, September and October.
Grape varieties and wine style
On the area taken over by the Förderverein Böddiger-Berg, Ehrenfelser is the predominant grape variety; in addition, Riesling and Kerner have been planted. Historically, Müller-Thurgau was also grown. The wine is described as dry, aromatic and harmoniously balanced. The rock weathered by basalt is associated with freshness and acidity. Alongside wine, a bottle-fermented Brut sparkling wine was also produced.
History and vinification
Georg Angersbach took up winegrowing again at the Böddiger Berg in the early 1950s. After his death in 1979 and a subsequent interruption, the Förderverein Böddiger-Berg was founded in 1993, which cultivates the vineyard organically and continued the growing. Regular wine production is documented from 1995. After the harvest, the grapes are brought to Hessische Staatsweingüter GmbH in Eltville, where they are pressed, matured and bottled.
