Location and Geology
The Augenscheiner is a vineyard site in Trier in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer growing region and lies directly on the River Mosel. The south-westerly facing site is at around 120 metres above sea level and has a slope of 35 to 50 percent. The classified soil consists of Buntsandstein.
Microclimate
The proximity to the Mosel and the heat-storing Buntsandstein formations influence the local microclimate. On the Mosel bank in Trier-Pallien, the Augenscheiner shows a geological contact between the Rotliegend and the Lower Buntsandstein.
Grape Varieties and Classification
The VDP-classified area covers 2.17 hectares. The Augenscheiner is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; the classified grape variety is indicated as Riesling. In addition, Grauburgunder and Pinot Noir are grown.
History and Ownership
A chronicle associated with the site reports that in 1552 Markgraf Alfred of Brandenburg received wine from the Augenscheiner and that the monastery was subsequently spared from further plundering. After the Napoleonic secularisation of the monasteries, the site passed to the Foundation of the Vereinigte Hospitien. It is their oldest vineyard and is held in sole ownership by the Foundation winery, Vereinigte Hospitien.
