Location and classification
Annaberg lies to the west of Kallstadt at the edge of the Haardt and borders directly on the Kreidkeller site. The municipality describes Annaberg as its smallest vineyard site. In the Rhineland-Palatinate register of vineyard sites, Annaberg is entered as a single site and belongs to the Großlage Feuerberg. The VDP lists the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE; this private classification is separate from the legal entry in the vineyard sites register.
Relief, climate and soils
The south-facing site is located at 160 to 180 metres above sea level and has an average slope gradient of ten per cent. For the Kallstadt area, for the period 2008 to 2013, a mean annual temperature of 10.8 °C, annual precipitation of 648 millimetres and 2,126 hours of sunshine per year are given.
Annaberg lies in the Kallstadt transition zone between limestone and Buntsandstein at the Haardt edge. Buntsandstein scree over calcareous marl and limestone rock is described, as well as Pararendzinas made of sand with tertiary limestone. As a limestone-bound, clay-rich soil, Terra fusca also occurs.
Vines and wines
The classified area comprises 5.03 hectares. Riesling is the grape variety specified for Annaberg in the VDP classification profile. The VDP member winery Weingut Rings works in the site. A documented Rings wine from the Kallstadter Annaberg is a dry Riesling white wine as a German Qualitätswein and VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS.
Cultivation and maturation
For this documented wine, buckwheat, clover and radish were sown and horse manure was applied. Double shoots were removed by hand and the shoots thinned out to improve aeration of the grapes. The grapes were harvested by hand and pressed gently. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts; the wine then matured for ten months on the lees in wooden casks and stainless-steel vessels. Sulphuring was carried out late; no fining was used.
Name history
According to the municipality of Kallstadt, a winegrower owner named his estate about 120 years ago after his wife. Later, the name was transferred to the vineyard site.
