Location and Classification
The Annaberg is a single vineyard site in Kallstadt in the winegrowing region Pfalz. The vineyards lie to the west of Kallstadt on the Haard edge and border directly on the Kreidkeller site. The VDP classifies the Annaberg as VDP.GROSSE LAGE.
Topography and Soils
The south-facing site is located at 160 to 180 metres above sea level and has an average slope gradient of ten percent. The VDP profile describes Buntsandstein sandstone gravel over calcareous marl and limestone. The municipal soil description also mentions a strongly variable combination of loamy sand, tertiary calcareous weathered soil and loam as well as Pararendzina and Terra-fusca-type calcareous brown earths.
Grape Variety and Wine
The VDP-classified area covers 5.03 hectares and is associated with Riesling. The documented Annaberg Riesling from the Rings winery from the year 2022 is classified as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS and as dry. For this wine, vineyard work includes, among other things, sowing buckwheat, clover and radish, horse manure, the manual removal of double shoots and breaking leaves for better aeration of the grapes. Yields are 3,000 litres per hectare.
History
A brickworks belonging to the Counts of Leiningen in the Borntal is documented for the first time in 1545. After it was destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War, it was rebuilt in 1683. From 1790, the tenant was allowed to serve wine produced on two Morgen of vineyard land. In the 1870s, Louis Fitz acquired the estate and named it after his wife Anna; from this, the name Annaberg later developed.
