Location and Topography
The Altenburg vineyard is located in Wachenheim at the Haardt edge between Forst and Wachenheim in the Pfalz. It is oriented from east to west, lies at around 155 to 185 metres above sea level, and has a slope gradient of 15 to 20 per cent.
Soil and Grape Varieties
The soil is described as slightly loamy sand with limestone rubble. A producer description characterises it as marl-rich loam with limestone rubble. In the vineyard, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay are grown.
Classification and History
The VDP lists Wachenheimer Altenburg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. The classified vineyard area is 6.00 hectares; the total vineyard size is given as 7.9 hectares. According to Georg Mosbacher, the name Altenburg refers to a wooden fortification, which is likely to have dated from the tenth century and was formerly located on the Maßweinkopf near the Wachtenburg.
