Location and classification
The Altarberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the municipality and in the wine-growing region Ellenz-Poltersdorf on the Mosel. It belongs to the Burg Cochem area and to the great vineyard Goldbäumchen. In the 2024 register of vineyard sites, the site is listed under number 440110; the planted area covers 40.9 hectares.
Topography and soils
The Altarberg lies between and directly above the Ortsteile of Ellenz and Poltersdorf. The moderate slope is described as a gently sloping hillside form (Gleithang) and enables the use of machinery for work in the vineyard. The soils consist of sandier substrates formed by river deposits.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner) and Spätburgunder are grown in the Altarberg. Documented are a 2025 Ellenzer Altarberg Kerner Qualitätswein in the fine-dry taste style and a 2015 Poltersdorfer Altarberg Riesling, also described as fine-dry.
Historical name
The name Altarberg is one of the field names of the municipality, which recall earlier noble and church landowners in the municipal wine-growing area up to the year 1800.
