Location and classification
Abtei Kloster Stuben is an officially listed single vineyard in the winegrowing region Mosel, area Burg Cochem, Großlage Grafschaft. It is located within the municipal and cadastral district of Bremm in Germany, opposite the Calmont and close to the ruins of the former Kloster Stuben. The vineyard site lies on the Moselle bend between Bremm and Ediger-Eller.
Terrain and soils
The vineyard plots lie directly on the Moselle on a gently sloping to almost flat hillside and also include nearly level parcels. Documented are sandy deposits from the Moselle as well as gravel, and fertile alluvial soils shaped by the river.
Climate and grape varieties
The area around the Moselle bend offers mild conditions. According to the site description, reflected warmth from the opposite Calmont contributes to ripening, among other factors; in addition, the adjacent floodplain and water availability throughout the year play a role. The site is described as suitable for early-ripening grape varieties. In the better sections, Riesling ripens successfully as well.
History and wine law
The vineyard site includes areas of the former Augustinian nunnery Stuben, which was founded in 1137 and historically was associated with vineyards and agricultural holdings along the Moselle. In the vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate, Abtei Kloster Stuben is listed as a single vineyard with the vineyard site number 440239 in the Qualitätswein winegrowing region Mosel. The officially recorded planted vineyard area amounted to 12.6 hectares in 2024.
