Location and landscape
Clare Valley is a wine region in Australia, in the state of South Australia, north of Adelaide within the Mount Lofty Ranges. The geographic indication covers around 680 square kilometres. The landscape consists of gentle ridges, valleys and slightly undulating terrain. The vineyards are located at different elevations and aspects, at approximately between 190 and 609 metres above sea level.
Climate and soils
The Mediterranean climate brings warm to hot summers, cool to cold winters, and predominantly rainfall in winter and spring. Afternoon sea breezes and large temperature differences between day and night influence ripening. For the region, around 232 millimetres of rainfall during the growing season and an average January temperature of 22.3 °C are given. The soils include, among others, terra rossa over limestone in Watervale, as well as soils formed from slate and siltstone on the Polish Hill River; in addition, there are red clay soils, slate, sandstone, alluvial soils and sandy soils with quartz fragments.
Viticulture and grape varieties
Many vineyards are farmed without irrigation. Documented measures include cover cropping, permanent ground cover, habitats for beneficial insects and an efficient approach to irrigation. In the 2024–25 regional profile, Clare Valley had about 5,093 hectares of vineyard area. The main grape varieties are Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon; in addition, Pinot Gris, or Pinot Grigio, and Merlot are among the leading varieties by production volume. Riesling is usually vinified dry and restrained, with lime and mineral notes, natural acidity and ageing potential. Shiraz often shows ripe blackberry, spice and mint notes, while Cabernet Sauvignon is characterised by dark fruit as well as firm, yet at the same time supple, tannins.
History and protected designation
European vineyards were established in Clare Valley in the 1840s. The Jesuits founded vineyards in Sevenhill; there, in 1852, the region’s first winery for the production of table wine was created. The Wendouree winery, established in 1893 by Alfred Percy Birks, is still in production. Clare Valley has been listed as a geographical indication in the Australian register of protected names since 25 March 1999. In 2000, the region’s winemakers worked together to promote screw caps, in particular to help preserve the freshness of Riesling.
