Location and landscape
Weyher is located in the Palatinate in the collective municipality of Edenkoben and in the district of Südliche Weinstraße. The wine-growing community lies on the Haard edge near the entrance to the Modenbachtal at about 270 metres above sea level and covers more than five square kilometres.
At the foot of the Blätterberg, Weyher lies between the vineyards of the Haard edge and the wooded Palatinate Forest. From there, views open out towards the Upper Rhine Plain. The landscape belongs to the fault zone of the Upper Rhine Graben, in which marl, sand, gravel, slope deposits and loess occur in a mosaic of geological blocks.
Viticulture and soils
Weyher is surrounded by vineyards, and viticulture is among the important local activities. In the official register of wine-growing sites, the single site Michelsberg in the Weyher cadastral district is listed within the group of sites Ordensgut. For the 2024 harvest, the register shows a planted area of 76.2 hectares.
Local producers make wines and sparkling wines (Sekt). The Michelsberg vineyard belongs to the wine-growing region Pfalz and is entered in the official register of vineyard names for regulated German quality wines. The protected designation of origin Pfalz covers wine, quality sparkling wine and sparkling wine (Perlwein).
Viticultural practice
In Weyher, local viticultural practices such as sowing green manure, avoiding soil compaction and using pheromones against animal pests are documented. Some vineyards are managed under controlled organic farming; the avoidance of herbicides is described as a practice specific to the business.
The municipality illustrates the geological diversity of its vineyard soils through a local exhibition of the rocks found there.
History
Weyher was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 777. During land consolidation in 1964, remains of a Roman villa and stone sarcophagi were found south of the parish church. From 1282 to 1801, the place belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer, from 1816 to 1947 to Bavaria, and since 1947 it has been part of Rhineland-Palatinate.
