Location on the Upper Moselle
Temmels lies on the Upper Moselle between Oberbillig and Nittel, directly on the Moselle opposite Luxembourg. The village belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel.
Vine-growing and soils
The sheltered river valleys of the Upper Moselle provide favourable conditions of warmth and precipitation for wine-growing. Shell limestone and other calcareous soils predominate. The single vineyard St. Georgshof lies within the cadastral district of Temmels and, in the 2024 vineyard directory, encompassed a planted vineyard area of 37.2 hectares. It is registered under vineyard number 420121 as a single vineyard in the Upper Moselle area and within the Großlage Gipfel.
Grape varieties and wine style
Elbling is a traditional grape variety of the Upper Moselle. In the wider wine-growing region of Mosel, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, white Pinot (Weißburgunder), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and other varieties are also cultivated. Upper Moselle wines made from Elbling are described as fresh, fruity and dry, including in sparkling wine versions.
History
Temmels was first documented in 634 as a “Villa Tamaltio” in the will of the deacon Adalgisel Grimo. The Georgshof, after which the vineyard St. Georgshof is named, was a former property of the Trier Commandery of the Teutonic Order. The Order was based there from the 13th century; the preserved Baroque complex was created in 1785 and 1786.
