Riol

Location and viticulture

Riol is a Mosel wine-growing village on the right, southern bank of the Mosel in Rhineland-Palatinate. The single vineyard Römerberg is officially recorded in the village and in the Riol cadastral district. In the Mosel growing area, it belongs to the Bernkastel area and the Großlage Probstberg.

The location Römerberg

The Römerberg comprises terrace, steep slope and hillside parcels. Among the soils mentioned are darker and red slate clay, slate weathering soils, gravel and loam. The 2024 vineyard register lists 139.7 hectares of planted vineyard area for the site.

Grape varieties and wine styles

Riesling is documented for the Riol Römerberg through current producer bottlings and historical records. Other historically documented grape varieties are Bacchus, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. Current Rieslings from the site are available in dry, off-dry and sweet styles; they are designated as German quality wine.

History and cellar practice

Riol is associated with the battle of Rigodulum described by Tacitus for the year 70 AD. The Römerberg wine education trail addresses winegrowing from the Roman period to the present day. A producer working there describes a nature-oriented approach to viticulture, the selection of the best grapes, and a gentle vinification. The current Römerberg Rieslings are matured classically in one-litre bottles and filled with a screw cap.
