Rauenthal

Location and History

Rauenthal is the highest-lying district of Eltville am Rhein and a wine-growing village in the Rheingau. Bubenhäuser Höhe offers wide views over the Rhine Valley. Rauenthal was first mentioned in a document in 1274.

Nonnenberg Vineyard Site

The Rauenthaler Nonnenberg is a single-vineyard site covering 5.6 hectares, facing south. The deep, stony and gravelly phyllite soils are supplemented in the lower slope area by loess clay. The site is registered as a legally recorded Rheingau single-vineyard for quality wine.

Origin of the Name and Wine Profile

The name Nonnenberg goes back to a late-classical villa on the hillside, in which nuns from the nearby monastery of Tiefenthal used to live and work the vineyard. Riesling has been documented for the site; the wines are described as full-bodied with fine spice and racy to firmly structured acidity.
