Location on the Moselle
Pölich is a municipality on the Moselle in Germany. The local vineyard sites include Pölicher Held and Lay.
Vineyard site Pölicher Held
The Pölicher Held vineyard site consists of two areas on opposite banks of the Moselle. It has a warm microclimate close to the Moselle and steep-slope plot parcels; a documented parcel is located above the former Moselle railway line. The areas on the opposite bank are characterised by slate clay soils. The Moselle valley near Pölich is cut into Devonian rocks, including slate formations.
Viticulture and local history
At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, new vineyards on the right bank of the Moselle significantly expanded the economic basis of Pölich. Before a bridge or ferry was available, the winegrowers brought their viticulture equipment to the Pölicher Held by boat; the number of boats led to the name “Pölicher Flotte”.
Historic evidence
Between the 2nd and 4th centuries, there were at least two Roman villas in Pölich, including a complex with a bathhouse. During the construction of the Moselle railway, a milestone from the year 212 was discovered, giving a distance of eight Roman leagues to Trier. Pölich belonged to the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin; this land ownership was confirmed in writing in 1140. The Pölich cadastral community is listed within the protected designation of origin area “Mosel” under number 2603.
