Location on the Saar
Ockfen lies in a side valley of the Saar on the Ockfener Bach and belongs to the wine region Mosel. The cool character of the region’s climate is influenced by the Saar and other rivers, which even out temperatures and promote the night-time air circulation on the vineyards’ slopes.
Bockstein and Geisberg
The Bockstein encloses Ockfen like an amphitheatre and falls away with a gradient of 38 to 80 per cent into a side valley of the Saar. The south-south-easterly to south-westerly oriented site lies at about 180 to 320 metres above sea level. The Geisberg lies as a steep south-facing slope above the town.
Soils and wine-growing
On the Bockstein, the terrain is shaped by stony, gravelly soils made of Devonian slate and weathered greywacke; in places, quarzitic sandstone and yellowish fine earth are also found. The Geisberg is characterised by Devonian slate soils. Both sites are classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®: the Bockstein with 58 hectares, and the Geisberg with 16 hectares. Riesling is designated as the grape variety. The Bockstein is once again fully cultivated, while the previously overgrown Geisberg has been reclaimed.
