Location and landscape
Lambsheim is located in the Palatinate in the northern Upper Rhine lowlands and forms part of the Vorderpfälzer lowlands. The surrounding area is predominantly flat and largely lies on the Frankenthal terrace. The elevations within the wider municipal area are roughly between 95 and 105 metres above sea level.
Climate and soils
The continental basin climate is characterised by warm summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is about 9 °C, and annual precipitation ranges between 500 and 550 millimetres. A long growing season favours heat-loving crops such as vines, while the comparatively low rainfall regularly leads to summer dry periods.
Lambsheim lies in the Upper Rhine Graben, whose near-surface geology is determined by Quaternary deposits over older Tertiary layers. In the surrounding area, fluviatile deposits are found on the Rhine terraces, sandy soils on the older low floodplain terrace, and loess and loess-derived soils on higher delta plain areas.
Viticulture
The single vineyard Burgweg is registered under the Großlage Rosenbühl in the Palatinate wine-growing sites directory. It comprises 81.2 hectares in the cadastral district of Lambsheim and 14.7 hectares in the cadastral district of Weisenheim am Sand. For the section associated with Burgweg in Weisenheim am Sand, sandier loam, loamy sand and sand are described as soil types.
History
Lambsheim was first documented in 768 in the Lorsch Codex under the name Lammundisheim. The municipality traces its origins to a Frankish settlement founded in the sixth or seventh century.
