Klingenmünster

Location and landscape

Klingenmünster is a winegrowing community in the Südliche Weinstraße district in Rhineland-Palatinate, and lies on the German Wine Route, about five kilometres north of Bad Bergzabern. The municipality is located at the transition between Pfalz and the Rhine lowlands. Vineyards and woodland shape the surrounding area, while the Klingbach flows through the local basin.

The vineyards are on gentle hills; to the west, the Palatinate Forest rises. Above the town stands Landeck Castle. The Haard edge location is described as having comparatively long sunshine duration, an early spring and a late, sunny autumn.

Viticulture and soils

Viticulture is a current economic sector in Klingenmünster. It was promoted locally in the 19th century; the construction of the German Wine Route in 1936 gave it another documented boost. In the local vineyard soils, shell limestone, sandstone of the Buntsandstein type, gravel-sand, loam and clay are found. The historical presence of sandstone quarries also shows that Buntsandstein is present in the municipality.

The official directory of wine-growing sites lists Maria Magdalena as a single site within the municipality and cadastral district of Klingenmünster, within the wider site Kloster Liebfrauenberg. For the site, 149.5 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.

Grape varieties and wine styles

In Klingenmünster, among others, Portugieser, Spätburgunder, Acolon and Riesling are grown. The local selection includes white and red wines in styles ranging from sweet to dry. The Porzelt winery has been certified as organic since the 2015 vintage and has been a member of Bioland since 2017.

Historic focal point

Klingenmünster developed around the monastery, which was first documented in 817 as “monasterio clingone”. The monastery became the economic and cultural centre of the surrounding settlement.
