Location on the Moselle
Kenn is a municipality on the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate and describes itself as the gateway to the Roman Wine Route.
Vineyard sites and terroir
The individual vineyard sites Held and Maximiner Hofgarten are located within the Kennen municipal and cadastral area, within the Großlage Probstberg in the Bernkastel district of the Moselle winegrowing region. The vineyards register lists 5.0 hectares of vineyard area for Held and 5.1 hectares for Maximiner Hofgarten.
Soils and wine style
The vineyards are characterised by deep, red-weathered, stony slate soils. The wines are described as dry or gently off-dry, as well as fruit-mild and elegant, with a complex character influenced by the slate.
Roman and monastic history
Archaeological finds provide evidence of a Roman manor farm in the centre of today’s Kenn, dating from around the middle of the 2nd century. The Maximinerhof was an early property of the St Maximin Abbey, bore the year 1739, and passed into private family ownership during the secularisation of the monasteries.
