Heßheim

Location and landscape

Heßheim lies in the northern Upper Rhine plain and in the Vorderpfälzer lowlands. The municipality belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Lambsheim-Heßheim. The landscape is predominantly flat and almost treeless; within the wider association area, the terrain extends from around 105 metres west of Heßheim to about 95 metres on the Frankenthal terrace.

Climate and soils

The continental basin climate brings warm summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 9 °C, and annual rainfall is approximately 500 to 550 millimetres. The northern Upper Rhine plain is among the drier areas in Germany; the Palatinate Forest reduces and redirects the prevailing winds.

The area around Heßheim belongs geologically to the Upper Rhine Graben. On the surface there are Quaternary deposits, including river deposits as well as loess and loess clay. Floodplain soils and gley soils, sandy soils and black earths are also documented on the gently raised elevations of the Frankenthal terrace.

A regional historical account already names the place in 729 as a wine-growing location. The Lange Els vineyard site comprises, according to the 2024 vineyard sites register, a planted area of 27.3 hectares and is classified as a single-site vineyard within the wine-growing region Pfalz, Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area, Großlage Schwarzerde.
