Ensch

Location and landscape

Ensch lies on the banks of the Moselle in the Middle Moselle, between Trier and Bernkastel. The place is surrounded by vineyards and forest and lies in a Moselle valley landscape in which winegrowing takes place both on steep slopes and on terrace deposits along the valley floor.

Climate and soils

The climate of the Middle Moselle is shaped by the sheltered valley, the Moselle’s heat storage and the forests on the surrounding heights. Each year there are nearly 1,400 hours of sunshine. The steep vineyard slopes consist mainly of slate weathering material, while terraces on the valley floor may be made of gravel, sand and loam.

Viticulture in Ensch

Viticulture has shaped Ensch for centuries. The Enscher Mühlenberg is a local wine-growing site, associated in particular with Riesling. In the vineyard, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Kerner are also grown. A documented producer vinifies the wines from his Mühlenberg vineyards in his own cellars.

Historical and legal framework

A yearly delivery of ten fuders of Ensch wine to Archbishop Boemund II has been handed down for the year 1366. Ensch belongs to the defined quality wine-growing region Mosel; the Moselle is recognised as a protected designation of origin by the European Union. The Middle Moselle produces mainly white wines, including mineral and fruity wines with a moderate alcohol content, ranging from dry to dessert wine.
