Dreis

Location and landscape

Dreis is a local municipality in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate, about eight kilometres south-west of Wittlich. The municipality lies in the Salmtal near the Eifel and the Moselle. A ridge surrounds the village and opens to the south.

Municipal area and mineral spring

Dreis lies at about 185 metres above sea level and covers around 1,126 hectares. The mineral water is connected with sediments of the Salm terrace. The St.-Martin source is described as a sodium-calcium hydrogen carbonate sour spring.

Vineyard site Johannisberg

The single site Johannisberg belongs to the Moselle wine-growing region, the Bernkastel area, and to the larger site Schwarzlay. In the official directory of vineyard sites, it is listed under site number 410909; both the municipality and the cadastral area are given as Dreis. The vineyard area is not shown in the directory for 2024, although this designation refers to sole ownership by a cultivating operation. On 15 December 2025, the municipality announced a rewording of the description of the vineyard site for viticultural reasons, in accordance with the German Wine Site Act.

History

Dreis was first mentioned in written records in the late eighth century and granted as a fief to the Abbey of Echternach. The abbey remained the territorial ruler until the French invasion in 1794.
