Location
Bobenheim am Berg is a municipality in the Verbandsgemeinde Freinsheim in the district of Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. The settlement lies on a hillside between Bad Dürkheim-Leistadt and Kleinkarlbach on the German Wine Route B271. From there, the view extends over the Rhine plain.
Landscape and climate
The vineyards lie directly in the wind shadow of the Haardt in gently rolling hilly country. The sheltered location ensures a long duration of sunshine; the Pfalz is also characterised by a mild climate.
Vineyard sites
The documented vineyard sites of Bobenheim am Berg include the Ohligpfad and the Kieselberg. The Ohligpfad in the northern part of the municipal area borders on Kleinkarlbach and Kirchheim and consists mostly of loamy sands, partly with gravel. The loamy-sandy soils there are particularly associated with Riesling. The Kieselberg has coarse-grained, stony and loamy sands as well as, in places, soils affected by limestone weathering; gravel-rich soils store water, aerate the roots and warm up quickly.
History
The place name Babenheim is documented for the year 1315. Monasteries in Höningen and probably Rosenthal owned land in Bobenheim am Berg. Later, the village belonged to the Counts of Leiningen up to the French Revolution. The name Ohligpfad has been used for a vineyard site for more than 200 years and refers to an old path to the Ohlig mill, also known as Kandelmühle, on the Eckbach.
