Location
Barbelroth is a municipality in the district of Südliche Weinstraße in southern Pfalz. It lies about five kilometres east of Bad Bergzabern between the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and the Rhine.
History
Barbelroth was first mentioned on 6 April 1179 in a papal protection charter that lists the property of the Abbey of Weißenburg. According to the municipality’s history, archaeological traces go back to the Hallstatt period; a predecessor building of the church has been dated to the 11th or 12th century.
Viticulture
The municipality’s history describes Barbelroth as a village once shaped by tobacco and wine-growing. The registered vineyard site Kirchberg is listed in the official vineyard database as “Kirchberg (Barbelroth)”. Barbelroth is also documented in the Rhineland-Palatinate vineyard soils mapping, whose entry is linked to mapping work from 1966.
