Location and landscape
Annweiler am Trifels is located in the Queich valley and is part of the Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen biosphere reserve. The town is surrounded by forests, meadows and vineyards. It is dominated by the castles of Trifels, Anebos and Scharfenberg.
Districts and geology
The town includes the local districts of Bindersbach, Gräfenhausen, Queichhambach and Sarnstall. Annweiler is characterised by red Bunter sandstone, which also shapes the surrounding landscape of the Trifels region.
Viticulture
Viticulture takes place within the town area on individual elevated sites facing south, which extend from the Haardt edge into the Trifelsland. Gräfenhausen is regarded as the westernmost wine-growing municipality in the Pfalz. In the district, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) has been cultivated for around 600 years.
History
Annweiler was mentioned in documents for the first time in 1116/1118 and was raised by Frederick II to the status of a free imperial city in 1219. In 1193, Richard I of England was held captive on Trifels Castle above Annweiler.
