Location and landscape
Altdorf is located in the Gäu landscape of the Palatinate. The municipality is surrounded by meadows, fields and vineyards and has an overwhelmingly open agricultural landscape. The municipal centre lies at approximately 49.28404° north latitude and 8.21451° east longitude.
Winegrowing
Altdorf is a winegrowing municipality within the protected designation of origin area of Palatinate. The individual vineyard sites Gottesacker and Hochgericht are officially registered within the Großlage Trappenberg. In the 2024 vineyard directory, 72.3 hectares are listed for Gottesacker and 70.4 hectares for Hochgericht as planted vineyard area.
History
Altdorf is first securely documented in records in connection with the Abbey of Weißenburg in 991. An earlier attribution to a mention of “Hochtorph” from the year 776 is given by the municipality as possible, but unconfirmed. The last Hochgericht of the Palatinate took place in Altdorf in 1787.
Wine industry
According to the municipality’s historical chronology, the winemakers’ cooperative “Vordere Oberhaardt” was founded in Altdorf in 1959. A family-run winery from Altdorf describes its wines as varietal-typical and predominantly dry or off-dry.
