Location and administrative affiliation
Sankt Katharinen is a local municipality in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the collective municipality of Rüdesheim. The municipality lies in a basin on the southern edge of the Soonwald and forms part of the wine-growing region Nahe.
Vineyard sites
The vineyard sites are located around the settlement area: The Klostergarten is situated to the south-east, the Fels to the south-west and the Steinkreuz to the west of the built-up area. In the vineyard area register for 2024, 16.5 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded for Fels, 2.5 hectares for Klostergarten and 1.8 hectares for Steinkreuz.
Viticulture and wine styles
In Sankt Katharinen, among others, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Grüner Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Bacchus, Kerner, Scheurebe, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Muscaris, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Dornfelder, Regent and Spätburgunder are grown. The local range of wines includes white wine, red wine, rosé or Weißherbst, Rotling, sparkling wine and Perlwein. A resident winery cultivates around ten hectares; vine planting, work in the vineyards and cellar work are carried out there by the family.
Historical reference
The former Cistercian nuns’ monastery in Sankt Katharinen dates back to a foundation decision in 1205 and existed until about 1640. Around 1800, the settlement was still simply referred to as a farmstead and described as a wine-growing village. Sankt Katharinen belongs to the legally defined geographical area of the protected designation of origin Nahe.
