Location and landscape
Bekond lies in the Mosel landscape. Fields and vineyards stretch out over the heights of the Mosel valley and the Eifel Foreland. The surroundings are shaped by the Mosel heights and the wooded Hummelsberg, from which views open out over the Mosel valley as well as towards the uplands of the Eifel and Hunsrück.
Vine growing
Bekond is a wine-growing community with registered single vineyard sites Brauneberg and Schloßberg. Both sites belong in the Mosel wine-growing region to the area of Bernkastel and to the large vineyard site of Sankt Michael. The vineyard directory 2024 lists for Brauneberg in the cadastral district of Bekond 49.9 hectares and for Schloßberg 27.3 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Viticultural conditions
In the Mosel valley around the Roman Wine Route, the protection provided by the Eifel and Hunsrück, the reflection of sunlight by the river and the heat storage of the slate soils are described as favourable conditions for wine growing. In 2023, the municipal council applied to assign from the cadastral district of Schweich transferred vineyard plots to the Bekonder Schloßberg site, so that the wines produced there can be marketed under a wine-lawfully permissible site designation.
History and wine tradition
Bekond was first mentioned in an official document in 1203, in which Joannes de Baccuone is named. In the surrounding area, remains of Roman settlements are also documented. The municipality has an established wine-growing tradition; local winegrowers offer wine tastings and tastings in an old vault cellar.
